How DIYDANCE Playlists Are Chosen

DIYDANCE playlists are built gradually over time from a wide range of music I come across, songs I like the feel of, and songs that have worked well in previous classes. I look for music that feels upbeat, positive and easy to move to. I generally avoid very heavy music such as drum and bass, heavy metal or punk, and I try to choose songs that aren’t overly negative. I also try not to make playlists too pop-heavy - I prefer a mix of familiar songs and songs with a good rhythm that people can move to comfortably.  I don’t strictly censor every song, but I do try to avoid anything that is very explicit or obviously offensive. If a song has good energy, a good beat, and feels good to move to, I may still include it. I also try not to use songs that are too long, so the sessions keep moving and the energy stays up. When I’m putting together a class playlist, I test how the songs flow together for movement and energy. Because of this, playlists continue to grow and change over time rather than being created all at once. Suggestions are always welcome, as people often have great songs that work really well for movement and dancing. A lot of the music selection is based on feel - whether a song makes people want to move, smile, or feel good - rather than sticking to specific artists or genres. The goal is to create a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere where people can move in their own way and feel comfortable.
